Interest rates, the best it gets. It’s time to deploy cash
Roger Montgomery
March 7, 2024
In the ever-changing landscape of financial markets, 2023 defied expectations, with highly anticipated recessions in Australia and the U.S. failing to materialise. But the macroeconomic insights of Gavekal Research, from all the way back to 1978 – that innovative growth stocks with pricing power do well amid disinflation and positive economic growth –, has proven consistently prescient. How to maximise your returns in 2024 and beyond
Roger Montgomery
February 6, 2024
I recently wrote about my two big forecasts for 2024. One was that private credit would gain traction as an important asset class and would also feature more prominently in advised portfolios, especially for those seeking uncorrelated returns, lower volatility, and regular attractive income. I also stuck my neck on the block and suggested that if disinflation and positive economic growth dominate the economic backdrop, investors will adopt more risk and buy select small-cap stocks, closing the gap that emerged in 2023 between them and the mega-cap technology companies. Continue…

Australia’s recession: GDP per capita records three consecutive negative quarters
David Buckland
March 6, 2024
Attending my undergraduate degree in the early 1980s, there was a big focus on gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. This meant economists took out the often-large stimulus from a rising population, and analysis was done over the population of the day. Continue…

What! How much do you need for a comfortable retirement?
Roger Montgomery
March 15, 2024
New spending figures published by the Association of Superannuation Fund of Australia (ASFA) define what it means to be comfortable in retirement. And while their numbers are well above the current age pension payments, I am not sure even those elevated numbers realistically measure up to what many, if not most, people would describe as comfortable. Why small cap companies are poised for growth in 2024
Roger Montgomery
April 12, 2024
In this week’s video insight, I delve into the promising realm of small cap companies for 2024, a sector where I’ve maintained a bullish stance since November 2022. The Small Ordinaries Index and the S&P600 Small Cap Index have shown noteworthy gains, underscoring the potential that these companies hold in a recovering economy. As global economic indicators signal a gradual improvement and the potential for a disinflationary boom, the stage is set for innovative small caps to thrive, especially with interest rates poised for a cut. Deflationary pressures in China – be careful what you wish for
David Buckland
February 7, 2024
Until recently, China’s decelerating inflation was welcomed by the West, as it led to lower imported prices and helped reduce inflationary pressures. However, China’s consumer prices fell for the third consecutive month in December 2023, delaying the expected rebound in economic activity following the lifting of COVID-19 controls. For calendar year 2023, CPI growth was negligible, whilst the producer price index declined by 3.0 per cent. Continue…
